John Cage made people feel an array of emotions, anger, sadness, irritation, laughter, but he never caused them to enjoy his songs due to the musicality of it. But that is why he loved it, the lack of musicality brought him joy. The people being upset about the performance or laughing at him for acting silly made him smile and want to continue. This expression of music in random sounds and noises is what John Cage declares his style of music. The sounds all around us are the music of life, and to me, that is the type of music John Cage makes. His pieces 4:33 and Water Works are both in this style of the “music of everyday life.” They are sounds from instruments that don’t form traditional music, or sounds from absolutely random everyday objects that Cage has assembled in a purposeful order. The order to the sounds is what makes it such a performance and the meaning and theme behind it is a strong form of language to convey the message. This shows how it is, in fact, art and music while still “just being random noises one after the next.” I am excited to make and hear everyone's projects to see how we all use everyday noises to make a piece of art that tells the audience a story. While we have the same noises to work with and will definitely hear sounds more than once, I am expecting there to be many different stories and themes across all songs.
